Creating a Loving Home Atmosphere: Building Others Up in Our Homes

Today I’m sharing a few ways to build up our families and create a loving atmosphere in our homes!

Recently, my 5-year-old said to me, “Mommy, I’m so glad we have a blessed home.” I smiled at him in pleasant surprise but also gratitude for his childlike observation of God’s presence in our home. “Yes, buddy, we certainly do have a blessed home,” I replied.

Our home is far from perfect, and my husband and I will be the first to admit our shortcomings. But as I reflect on how Christ has worked in our hearts and changed us as people, I marvel at how different our home would be without Him.

I know not everyone has had the privilege of growing up in a loving Christian home, yet I am thankful for the redeeming mercy and grace that God pours into those who truly turn to Him. No one is bound to his past, and no one is doomed to living unloving towards others.

Even in my extended family’s past, there are sad stories where Christ was so obviously absent in the hearts and minds of unbelieving hearts, yet God did a work in my parent’s hearts as first-generation Christians and saved them as teenagers. Today my family continues the legacy of the gospel seed planted years ago.

Whether a loving home is new or old hat to you, it’s good to refresh ourselves (or learn for the first time) what love really looks like in a home. It’s so easy to give mental assent to loving others around us, but how much do we really care about those sharing our roof or living beside us? I speak not from a high horse but from God gently convicting me lately and showing me just how unloving and impatient I have been with those around me.

There are a million plus ways to genuinely love others in our lives, but today I want to share just a few thoughts on creating a loving home atmosphere where the inhabitants feel valued and loved.

Creating a Loving Home Atmosphere: Speaking Positive Words

Nothing destroys a loving home atmosphere faster than harsh, mean, unthankful, or negative words. Words truly do break our spirits, and the power of life and death is in the tongue. Here are a few ways to speak courage and grace into hearts:

Treat others with respect. Use a respectful tone of voice even in disagreements.

Instead of complaining to family members (especially our spouses), focus on the positive and the goodness of God.

Break forth into song while doing mundane chores; sing a hymn the family has been working on together.

Praise God in the middle of the day even for little things.

Be a friend, not a judge whenever possible.

Bolster our children with genuine praise for jobs well-done. If we don't praise them, someone else will, and chances are, it won't be the right kind of people.

Creating a Loving Home Atmosphere: Focusing on God’s Word

Set aside time for family bible reading, prayer, bible memory, and singing. Our children love the bible story books by Abeka! My sis-in-law recently gave me some great little books for teaching simple truths to young hearts.

Set up scripture cards around your home. My children love having these cards by their beds. Knowing that a bible verse is near comforts them in the night.

Creating a Loving Home Atmosphere: Little Acts of Love

Often love demonstrates itself in the quiet moments of life, often when we least have time for such demonstrations. Here are a few ideas:

Write thoughtful notes to family members. One night this week my husband wrote each of our children a note affirming areas of growth in their lives. The notes were well-received surprises for the children in the morning.

Get down on the floor and play with children.

Read daily to the children. This is probably my children’s favorite way to spend time with me.

Make nutritious meals every day. Cooking food for our families is an act of love as we nourish not only their bodies but their spirits.

I am grateful for every loving home that I have had the privilege of entering, and each of those homes has had a lasting impact in my heart. I truly hope that all who enter my home will remember it as a loving, comforting place.

May you find joy in creating a loving home atmosphere for those around you!
