October Scripture Writing Plan

Golden shafts of early autumn sunlight shimmered through tree branches, settling on the root-studded path around Lake Placid. The path, meandering around the uneven sides of the lake, was only a mile long—a perfect jaunt for parents and children. And on a quiet Sunday afternoon a father and his four children took advantage of the simplicity and beauty of this easy hike.
That father was my dad, and I was one of those four children a few decades ago. I have happy memories of my dad taking us to this local state park on quiet Sunday afternoons, probably to get the kids out of the house and give my mother some respite.
I will never forget that before venturing out on our hike, my dad gave us clear instructions on how to walk on a wooded trail. He pointed out roots, warned of loose rocks, and instructed to watch out for wildlife.
In those childhood days of learning to hike, my dad was my guide. He instructed me. He pointed out dangers and undoubtedly lead the way on that autumn hike.
On a much grander scale, God guides and He leads. God can lead us on the trail of life, and He longs to make our paths clear, not always straight or easy, but clear.
But in order for God to be our Guide, something has to happen first. In order for God to be our Guide, we must be willing to follow.
In those early hiking days, I could have ignored my dad’s counsel and run full steam ahead of him. The result would have been catastrophic. He probably would have had to scoop me up and take me home to bandage a scraped knee, or worse.
In like fashion, we can ignore God’s voice and run ahead of Him on the trail of life.
Yet how do we let God lead? By hearing His voice. And how can we hear His voice? Through His amazing word.
