I did something a bit unexpected for this month’s scripture writing plan. Though the theme is gratitude, I deliberately chose not to use many verses from Psalms. I wanted to challenge myself to see gratitude throughout the entire narrative of scripture, not just from the comfortable pages of the beloved Psalms.

In this 31 Day Scripture Writing Plan you will

-find a weeping prophet giving thanks.

-find a captive giving God praise in the land of his captivity.

-find the overseer of a massive rebuilding project organizing praise during a time of intense danger and intrigue.

-find a humble shepherd praising God (and no, I am not talking about David).

-see the Lord Jesus Himself praising God the Father.

-see a persecutor-turned-founder-of-countless churches reminding his spiritual children to be thankful.

-find a rebellious preacher--bent on having his own way--finally praising God.

Gratitude is for all time, in every place, and should be from every person. There is no limit to gratitude, and there is no “cap” for praising God! It’s easy to think that we should only focus on gratitude in the month of November (for all my American friends celebrating the official Thanksgiving holiday), yet gratitude should permeate every single day of our lives.

Scripture tells us that when we neglect (at best) or refuse (at worst) to praise God, our understanding and perception will be blinded. But when we begin to see the world and our personal circumstances through the glasses of gratitude, we begin to spiritually perceive a mere portion of God’s goodness and kindness in every detail of life.

Thank God when you feel like it. I used to think it insincere to thank God when life seemed good. But doesn’t God want to hear a “thank you” when I am enjoying the good things in my life?

Thank God even when you don’t feel like it. I have found that when I thank God during the times when I don’t feel like it, that sacrifice of praise—like the rudder of a ship—slowly begins to turn the course of my grumbling, mumbling heart. Soon I am humbled by the undeserved goodness of God, and I see again how kind He is to me every single day.

Ingratitude is darkness, friends. But gratitude is light and joy and peace. Life will never be perfect, neither circumstance nor people, but God is perfect, and we can rest in His perfection.

Happy scripture writing, friends!

-Ashley

P.S. One small way that you can show gratitude for this blog is to share it with a friend! Sharing is caring.
