How to Keep Homemaking Even When It's Hard

Life has its hard.

A new baby comes, full of snuggles but demanding needs.

A health crisis explodes, requiring every ounce of strength and attentive thought.

A relationship goes sideways, hurting the heart and weighing on the mind.

A ________ happens, __________. You fill in the blank for what is your hard right now.

While life ebbs and flows, the seasons of homemaking are constantly changing. Sometimes we can give full attention to our homes, and other times, it seems as if the most basic of homemaking tasks take herculean effort.

Today I want to share some encouraging thoughts on how to keep homemaking even when it’s hard.

The Heart of the Homemaker

Investing In My Thinking

Recently I’ve found my thoughts about my home swirling. Perhaps it’s baby hormones. Nevertheless, I’ve felt my frustration rise and my attitude tank.

My hands stopped. I couldn’t move forward. My murky attitude muddled my ability to work in my home.

Before picking up another dirty sock or starting another load of laundry, I needed some heart care. My heart cried out for help and my attitude needed a nudge.

These three actions have helped me the most when my mind is clouded and I can’t seem to do one more homemaking task:

Pray.

I tell God what is bothering me. I cry out to Him for wisdom. I cry out to Him for comfort.

God hears and He cares. In His time and way, He answers my prayers and helps me with the mundane.

Reach out for help.

So often before I even think to pray, I reach out for human help.

I have a few friends on speed dial (practically). These ladies have prayed with me over big things (my heart’s desire for a baby) and little things (how in the world to fix my kitchen table that I refinished—again).

My greatest cheerleader, counselor, and confidant is my husband. We text throughout the day, and while I try not to bombard him, I have texted him countless times when my heart is hurting and I can’t even see the path before me. So many times my patient husband has shed light on simple matters, and his listening ear and wisdom gave me the clarity to move forward.

Read God’s Word.

I like to read my bible in the morning, but sometimes that just doesn’t happen with a new baby. When evening comes and all the children are in bed, I often grab my bible and read for a few minutes. God’s Word comforts me and so often gives me courage—the bravery I need to keep fighting the dirt and chaos in my home.

Investing In My Doing

At the end of the day, home is still home. There is no magic pixie dust from amazon that I can sprinkle to make the place Pinterest-perfect.

But each day I work. Each day I do something to make my home a better or cleaner place. Daily, I apply effort in my home.

I can’t seem to follow the daily schedules that many lovely folks recommend.

That’s okay. Just keep working on my home a little bit each day.

I can’t seem to get my home perfectly decluttered or decorated.

That’s okay. Just keep clearing out a drawer or cupboard at a time. Spruce up one little counter or set a vase of flowers on the table.

A little bit each day counts. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It doesn’t have to follow a schedule.

Just keep at it.

Pick what’s most needy and give it some love and elbow shine.

Faith and family—these are what really count in life. My home may never make it to the magazines. My home may never win awards. But my home is the daily scene of my blessed life, a place to treasure the dearest people in the world to me.

Friend, may your heart sense God’s peace as you rest in Him. May your hands diligently pursue the work of home. And may you enjoy the sweet fruit of heart and home.

Such a hearfelt, peaceful post. Thank you for bringing to light the individuality of home—no home is like anyone else’s. We should not compare our homes, but in joyful acceptance we will find peace as we apply the daily effort to keep our homes.

Ashley, this was so beautifully put. Something that has helped me, sometimes, is doing things in stages. It was illuminating to realize I didn't have to doe it all at once.I'm so happy for you that God answered your prayer for another baby. X Debbie.
