3 Ways to Avoid Feeling Overwhelmed

At the start of a new day, I have stood many a time at my kitchen sink with thoughts swirling like the dishwater swirling down the drain. Thoughts about all the things I should be doing and want to do bombard my mind, and paralyzed I stand at the sink wondering where to even begin.

Today I want to share 3 ways to avoid feeling overwhelmed to help anyone get out of the vortex of feeling overwhelmed.

Our days don’t have to be perfect and we certainly don’t have to accomplish everything we feel pressured to do, yet our days can still be full of purpose and diligence.

Just Stop

My first piece of encouragement is simply to stop and be still. Stop thinking all the thoughts and slow down.

Ask yourself, “What’s important right now?”

I like the little details of life, and I can often miss the forest for the trees. In other words, I often get so zoned in on specific details that I can miss what is actually the most important at the moment.

Perhaps as a wife and mom, my days are filled with tiny details, and often I get muddled in those details. It can be very hard for me as a homemaker to lift my eyes off of the crumbs on the floor and the disorganized closet and think down the road to a future time.

Purging that dreaded closet or decluttering our workshop (2 tasks I really want to tackle) are probably not what’s important right now with a new baby on the way. I’ve had to adjust my thinking and focus on what’s actually important right now in our family—getting ready for baby.

If you are feeling completely overwhelmed, ask yourself, “What actually needs to happen right now?” Chances are, many of the things you feel pressured to do actually are not what you need to do in this moment.

Let go of the “Later”

As a perfectionistic person, I can think everything has to be done perfectly right now. I mean, that lady on social media has a perfect house and life right now, so why can’t I? I hope you caught my cheeky drift…

I often feel guilty about not doing all the work now that needs to be done, but I’m learning that wisdom says there is a time and place for everything that must be accomplished. Just because now is not the time to do a task doesn’t mean I’m lazy or that the task will never get done.

Recently, my husband reminded me of this concept of later. In my recent nesting instincts, I am ready to purge some old technology that we no longer need. In my mind, we can just dump it off at the landfill, right? But my husband, the wise and tech-savvy man that he is, knows that there is a proper way to dispose of technology so as not to reveal personal information. He has promised me that he will get to this project in due time. Later. Enter patience for me. Later does not mean lazy. Later just means now is the not the time for the task.

Something I hope to do soon is make a list of all the “later” tasks that are bugging me. This list will allow me the mental opportunity to acknowledge what is bothering me, and I am hoping my mind can settle and allow these tasks to rest…until later.

Friends, if you are feeling overwhelmed, I hope that you can breathe, slow down, and focus your mind on what actually needs to happen. It’s so easy to be influenced (as our world wants us to be) that we feel frazzled and unable to take the next step.

Focus on the important. Focus on what really needs to happen. Let go of the unnecessary or save it for later.

Wishing you a very calm and productive week!
