Life slows during the long blue and green days of summer. Our spirits lift just as the sunflowers chase the sun. Life feels gentler, and our interiors can mimic the lightness we sense in our hearts.
Today I want to share a few simple changes that made my bedroom feel more like summer.
None of these changes were hard or cost a lot of money. Just a little time, effort, and creativity made my summer bedroom look brighter.
Making Little Changes
A few weeks ago, I looked at my bedroom shelf and decided that it looked heavy and dark—like winter. It was time to shed the dark-framed antique art for something in tune with the season, a beautiful botanical print by my artist friend.

To finish styling the shelf, I pulled in a few more elements that remind me of summer nature. A whimsical cast-iron bird reminds me of the many little birds who live in and visit our yard on a daily basis.

A vase with a blue flower crested on its front reminds me of the various purple and blue flowers growing in my garden: purple coneflower, blue sage, and catmint.
The top of my armoire also looked stifled in heavy crocheted blankets. It was time to shed the cloaks of winter and exchange them for lighter quilts from yesteryear.

Recently, my mom gifted me another quilt from my paternal grandmother. I could not be happier with such a gift! I marvel at the gentle care and time it took to make these beautiful quilts. Their cheerful colors just remind me of the bright colors of summer!
I love keeping the mainstays (walls, bedding, furniture, etc.) neutral in our master bedroom. A neutral color scheme allows me to change accents on a whim and acknowledge the change in seasons. I also find a neutral color scheme very relaxing in a personal space, especially when I need to unwind after long, tiring days.

How I Change the Look of a Room
Sometimes it can be hard to know where to even start when an inkling to redecorate comes. Here are a few helpful tips for restyling a room.
Declutter anything that is not useful or beautiful.
Give the room a good cleaning—dust and vacuum thoroughly.
Create a blank slate—remove the elements that you want to put away.
Then start adding décor that suits your fancy. I usually have to tinker around for a bit before I get the décor just how I want it.
