Enjoy Each Day

A cloud of newborn baby fog shrouded my sleepy mind while I pulled back the white curtain to peek at the waking world. I was not expecting to see anything beautiful on this gray, late winter morning that pretended to be a spring morning, but I was delightfully surprised. The surprise had seemingly grown overnight in my garden.

Tiny white blossoms, like miniature white bells in fruitful clusters, adorned my blueberry bushes in the front garden. Against the pale gray of the morning, the white blossoms struck a contrast as pretty as a vintage Edith Holden painting. I smiled. This was one of those unobtrusive moments of life when joy comes unexpectedly, and I savored the moment.

Sometimes joy comes in quiet, unexpected moments like this one. In these moments, life is easy to enjoy and to see the good.

Other days, nothing seems to be going right and nothing seems beautiful. On these days, life can be hard to enjoy. Yet there is still joy to be found and enjoyment for the taking.

With a newborn babe in my arms and older children underfoot, life is anything but perfect these days, but I am learning to enjoy each day. Like the above moment of garden wonder, I am learning to treasure the unplanned moments and blessings and to seek for joy even when it seems hidden.

Today I want to share a few ways that I am learning to enjoy each day despite the imperfections and even disappointments of life.

Don’t Wait for Perfection

So often the undone and the imperfect captivates my attention. Yet if I wait for everything in my life to be as I want it, I will never find the joy. I am learning to enjoy each day for what it is—messes and all.

Look for the Good

Instead of seeking perfection which will never be found—like a whimsical unicorn of a little girl’s imagination—seek for the good that already surrounds me. Looking for the good means training my perception and honing my attitude to one of gratitude.

Savor the Moments

So often I view life in the same way as the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland views tea parties: “Move down, new cup!” Instead of relishing what is before me, I am quick to move on to the next tea cup.

The Grass is Green Right Here

Like a silly lamb nosing and nudging through the fence and into the next pasture, I sometimes view my neighbor’s grass with jealousy. Yet the next pasture is not mine, nor is the grass for my taking or enjoyment. What I do not realize is that the lamb next pasture is nudging through the fence into my pasture wishing for my grass. Oh, to learn contentment for the pasture I’ve been given…now this is true peace and joy.

Dear friends, I wish you true joy in life. May you see the blessings that surround you and may you truly enjoy each day!
