6 Ways that I Use Castile Soap in My Home

March 23, 2026

My journey towards more natural products actually started when my mom found out she was allergic to so many common household and personal products. After many visits with various doctors, mom realized that so many products today have unnecessary (and unhealthy) chemicals and fragrances in them.

In my own home, I have tried to move towards a more natural approach in as many products as possible—both cleaning and personal. We are not a totally “crunchy” family, and we still use certain products like Aussie hair products, hair gel, etc. But whenever possible, I like to substitute natural products that actually work.

One hard-working, multi-tasking cleaner that I have come to love is castile soap. This isn’t a sponsored post, and I’m not making a cent from sharing my opinion—I genuinely love castile soap! My favorite brand that I use and trust is Dr. Bronner's.

Today I want to share 6 ways that I use castile soap in my home. These ways are not just made up for a blog post; I actually use this stuff constantly around my home!

1.       Homemade Laundry Soap

I have used both liquid and bar castile soap to make homemade laundry detergent.

As of recently, I tried this insanely simple liquid recipe from Our Oily House, and so far it seems to be working well! I love that I have the 4 ingredients on hand almost all the time and can quickly mix up a batch.

2.       Laundry Booster

If I have a particularly dirty, smelly load of laundry, I like to add straight castile soap to the laundry detergent. To do this, I simply grab one of my castile soap containers and pour some soap straight on top of the laundry as it’s filling with water.

3.       All-purpose cleaner

Add about ¼ cup to a small glass spray bottle. Honestly, I hardly ever measure. I just pour some castile soap in the bottom of the bottle and then fill to the top with water (I prefer to use water from our gravity water filter).

4.       Mop water

I love using castile soap to boost my hot mop water. It makes the house smell nice while also cutting into floor grime. I don’t use a ton of soap because it can make the water too soapy for mopping, so a little bit goes a long way.

I simply add a few squirts of castile soap to about a half a sink of hot water. I love my Norwex mop system, and I think the castile soap works well with it. Technically, you are not supposed to use anything but water with the Norwex system, but I think a little castile soap works just fine.

5.       Hand soap

For years I have been refilling foaming hand pumps with castile soap to make our own foamy hand soap! This is a cheap and healthy way to replenish soap bottles. Simply fill about ¼ of a foaming hand pump with your choice of castile soap and then fill to the top with water. I usually always have castile soap on hand in our bathtub, so when we run out of hand soap, I simply walk over to the tub and pour some castile soap into the pump.

6.       Personal care

I love using Dr. Bonner’s as my body soap. Just a squirt or two on a washcloth is sufficient for a good full-body scrub.

Occasionally, I even use it as my shampoo. If you use it as shampoo, I would definitely recommend a good quality conditioner as the castile soap will thoroughly clean (aka strip) hair of any oil.

Dr. Bronner’s has a very gentle, unscented castile soap designed for babies which I intend on using with our new little one. I love that I can feel confident with a gentle soap that is not chockful of harsh chemicals. The soap is gentle and effective and gets baby clean without all the extra junk.

I hope you are inspired to give castile soap a try. It can seem kind of pricey at first to pay $16 or $17 for a bottle of soap. But once I realized how much I could do with this amazing soap and that I really don’t need to use much, I realized the incredible health and economical benefits of castile soap.

Happy and healthy homemaking, friends!
