My first introduction to this marvelous hymn was in my third-grade classroom. The entire Christian school had been tasked with learning "Day by Day" to sing in honor of our principal’s retirement. "Day by Day" was Miss Heinz’s favorite hymn, and I do not doubt that hearing the entire school sing her favorite hymn was a moving moment for her.
There were some phrases in this hymn that seemed odd to me as a little girl, but now that I have traversed life for a few years since that time, I experientially understand their meaning.
“He whose heart is kind beyond all measure,
Gives unto each day what He deems best.
Lovingly, it’s part of pain and pleasure,”
Life certainly has its moments of sorrow, but there are also many beautiful moments of joy and delight.
“Mingling toil with peace and rest.”
Life certainly has its moments of toiling work, yet there are times of pleasant rest. I am grateful for the balance.

About ten years ago, I wrote an arrangement of this fantastic hymn for violin with piano accompaniment. To be honest, I really do not know why I never published it, and then it got lost in the computer files. I was convinced I had permanently lost the arrangement and would have to retype the entire piece (a lot of work!).
But hubby came to the rescue and found my computer file buried somewhere in a deep, dark corner of our computer...
So today is the day that I share this arrangement of "Day by Day" with anyone who would care to play it for themselves. I’ve included a FREE sample of the first three pages for you.

This arrangement is a little more advanced than what I have been writing lately, but any violinist who can play in 3rd position should be able to easily master it. There are some beautiful, soloist passages where the violin is thoughtfully showcased. And at other times, the piano takes the lead with the violin tenderly supporting the melody.
